The Midway Review is a quarterly journal of critical and personal essays founded in 2006 at the University of Chicago. Its aim is to promote good writing, original thought, and spirited inquiry. Its essays examine arts and culture, philosophy and politics, but speak across the intellectual spectrum. In general, we are interested in essays in the original sense of the term: thoughtful attempts, not academic papers.
Who we are as a publication is largely defined by what we publish in a given issue. We are looking for writing that is reflective, compelling, and unafraid to assert a new idea. We are particularly interested in writing in which something feels at stake. Our recent issues have included a letter from northern Iraq, aesthetic reflections on craft beer, a review of Evil Men, a personal essay on flight and maturity, and an interview with Martha Nussbaum.
The editors of The Midway Review accept submissions from students and recent graduates from all universities. We consider submissions for the Review's print issues each year in late October, January, and April. We also occasionally publish supplementary online content.
The Midway Review is graciously supported by the Student Government Finance Committee and the College of the University of Chicago.
